Question 1

What motherboard suits Core i7 14790F, and how should power delivery, memory, and ports be balanced?

Accepted Answer

LGA1700: B760 is enough, DDR4 or DDR5 but not both. Update the BIOS (stability fix) and confirm the QVL; with no iGPU, check the GPU slot.

Question 2

What cooler does Core i7 14790F need, and how do gaming and sustained all-core loads differ?

Accepted Answer

Cooler than the i9: a dual tower covers it; full load is about 200W, so long renders favor a 240mm AIO. Check clocks after a 10-minute all-core run.

Question 3

How should the core and thread counts of Core i7 14790F be understood, and do more cores help in games?

Accepted Answer

The 14790F has 16 cores and 24 threads (8P + 8E) with no iGPU, a China-only SKU that drops four efficiency cores versus the 14700F.

Gaming is basically unchanged (games do not use E-cores); the cut hits multi-threaded productivity a little. It needs a discrete GPU; buy it only if the price is right.

Question 4

How does Core i7 14790F handle gaming, and how large is the gap versus cheaper models?

Accepted Answer

The 14790F games almost identically to the 14700F; the missing E-cores do not matter in games. No iGPU; pair the GPU by resolution, with the card usually the limit.

Question 5

The China-market 16-core 14790F — any special notes for AI?

Accepted Answer

The 14790F is the China-exclusive 16-core/24-thread part: 5.4GHz boost, 36MB of L3 (a touch more than the 14700F's 33MB), VNNI INT8 and no iGPU. Its AI difference from the 14700F is effectively nil — 3MB more L3 is unmeasurable in daily loads, and its reason to exist is pricing. Buying advice: compare same-price configs and take whichever is cheaper between the 14790F and the 14700F; note it has 16 cores, not the 14700's 20 — don't let the '14790' name mislead you. Local small models, embedding and preprocessing all fit; a discrete GPU plus 192GB of RAM is its right posture.
