Is a laptop with Core i9 13980HX good enough for gaming, and does the CPU or GPU matter more?

The Core i9 13980HX is a 24-core, 32-thread 2023 flagship HX, essentially the same silicon as the 14900HX at slightly lower clocks. Whether the laptop is enough depends on dGPU TGP and MUX support: it only shines with RTX 4080/4090-class parts, and a mid-range card becomes the limit.

High-refresh 1080p and CPU-heavy games favor the CPU; 1440p/4K is GPU-led. The same GPU runs at very different TGP across models, so compare real power and cooling figures, not just the names.
