Question 1

How many cores and threads does Core i9 13980HX have, and is it suitable for gaming and video editing in a laptop?

Accepted Answer

24 cores, 32 threads (8P + 16E), 5.6GHz boost, 36MB L3, laptop HX platform, launched Q1 2023. Same silicon as the 14900HX at slightly lower clocks, so performance is nearly identical and clearance or used units offer better value; gaming results still hinge on chassis cooling and the GPU.

Question 2

How much can Core i9 13980HX's performance change between power modes, and when should performance mode be used?

Accepted Answer

Performance mode on the 13980HX works the same as on the 14900HX: plugged in, it raises CPU power and fan speed, suiting rendering, compiling, and high-frame gaming; balanced serves everyday work. To verify: switch modes on the same machine and time the same task — that comparison is reliable, while comparing modes across two different laptops isn't meaningful.

Question 3

Is a laptop with Core i9 13980HX good enough for gaming, and does the CPU or GPU matter more?

Accepted Answer

The Core i9 13980HX is a 24-core, 32-thread 2023 flagship HX, essentially the same silicon as the 14900HX at slightly lower clocks. Whether the laptop is enough depends on dGPU TGP and MUX support: it only shines with RTX 4080/4090-class parts, and a mid-range card becomes the limit. High-refresh 1080p and CPU-heavy games favor the CPU; 1440p/4K is GPU-led. The same GPU runs at very different TGP across models, so compare real power and cooling figures, not just the names.

Question 4

How long can a laptop with Core i9 13980HX last for office work and gaming away from the charger?

Accepted Answer

Office runtime depends mostly on dGPU idle behavior, screen refresh, and battery capacity; the CPU is one factor. Switching to hybrid or iGPU mode and 60Hz in the control center extends runtime noticeably.

Unplugged gaming is impractical on HX machines; the power gap is too large, so keep the charger connected.
