Q: What cooler does Core i9 9980XE Extreme Edition need, and how do gaming and sustained all-core loads differ?

At 165W full load, the 9980XE's floor is a decent dual-tower air cooler; sustained all-core renders call for a 280/360mm AIO. Gaming is light and air sails through. Before buying, confirm the LGA2066 bracket — X299 mounting differs from LGA1700, and used AIOs deserve extra scrutiny. Also glance at VRM cooling; just don't seal the case.

Question 1

What motherboard suits Core i9 9980XE Extreme Edition, and how should power delivery, memory, and ports be balanced?

Accepted Answer

The 9980XE needs an X299 board: LGA2066, quad-channel DDR4-2666. New boards are long gone and used inventory is thin; many boards need a BIOS update to support the 9000-series parts — confirm before buying. Avoid entry-level boards; this CPU draws real power under load. Fill all four memory channels; two sticks cut bandwidth and drag multi-core performance down.

Question 2

What cooler does Core i9 9980XE Extreme Edition need, and how do gaming and sustained all-core loads differ?

Accepted Answer

At 165W full load, the 9980XE's floor is a decent dual-tower air cooler; sustained all-core renders call for a 280/360mm AIO. Gaming is light and air sails through. Before buying, confirm the LGA2066 bracket — X299 mounting differs from LGA1700, and used AIOs deserve extra scrutiny. Also glance at VRM cooling; just don't seal the case.

Question 3

How should the core and thread counts of Core i9 9980XE Extreme Edition be understood, and do more cores help in games?

Accepted Answer

The 9980XE has 18 cores and 36 threads, the 2018 HEDT flagship. Its multi-core chops still hold up for rendering, transcoding, and VMs, but the single-core performance and platform are old, and gaming is unremarkable. It now lives mostly on the used market at friendly prices; if you already own X299, it's a sensible upgrade. As a fresh build—no. Old DDR4 platform, scarce boards, and poor value next to modern consumer CPUs.

Question 4

How does Core i9 9980XE Extreme Edition handle gaming, and how large is the gap versus cheaper models?

Accepted Answer

The Core i9 9980XE is an 18-core/36-thread X299 HEDT CPU. Judging this one by gaming is a category error: games won't touch most of its cores, and its old single-core performance loses to a sub-$200 modern i5 in 1080p high-refresh esports.

If you've got an X299 board lying around, it's a great workhorse — pair it with a 4070-class card and play at 1440p/4K, where the GPU is the bottleneck. Fresh gaming build? Buy a modern platform and don't touch old HEDT.

Question 5

Memory capped at 128GB — does the earlier Core i9-9980XE still deserve a slot in an AI rig?

Accepted Answer

It earns a slot — a secondary one. 18 cores/36 threads over four DDR4 channels still saturate on bulk embeddings, corpus cleaning and parallel small jobs, precisely the chores that want many threads and could not care less about boost clocks. The 128GB ceiling, though, ends any ambition of staging large models on board. If the platform already sits in a drawer, fill the memory, repurpose it as a data-preparation workhorse and it pays its electricity bill. Building fresh around it does not compute: 4.4GHz single-core and DDR4 trail the current generation by a wide margin, and a display card is still mandatory. The same money on a modern platform with a GPU returns far more.
