Question 1

How many cores and threads does Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX have, and which workloads suit it?

Accepted Answer

The Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX is 64 cores and 128 threads on Zen 2 (Castle Peak), sWRX8 platform (WRX80 boards), eight-channel DDR4 ECC RDIMM, 2.7GHz base and 4.2GHz boost, 280W TDP. It mostly lives inside professional workstations like the Lenovo ThinkStation P620, aimed at enterprise loads: rendering, engineering simulation, VMs, medical imaging. Versus the consumer 3990X it adds ECC memory support and eight-channel memory — a tier up in stability and expansion, and a tier up in price. Gaming has nothing to do with it: 64 cores sit idle through most games, the single-core speed is what it is, and it was never designed for frame rates. Only buy one if your software genuinely feeds all 128 threads.

Question 2

What cooler does Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX need, and how do gaming and sustained all-core loads differ?

Accepted Answer

The 3995WX runs 280W sustained and needs a cooler covering the full large heat spreader. WRX80 boards use a server-style bracket, so standard coolers don't fit — get an sWRX8-specific model. Gaming barely wakes it; rendering and simulation load the eight-channel memory and VRMs too. After building, stress with real work, log power, clocks, and temperatures, and set fan curves from the data.

Question 3

What motherboard suits Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX, and how should power delivery, memory, and ports be balanced?

Accepted Answer

The 3995WX only fits sWRX8 boards with the WRX80 chipset — a handful of flagship workstation models from ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI, all expensive and mostly bought new or through business channels. Memory is eight-channel DDR4 ECC RDIMM; populate it per the manual or you lose bandwidth. Expansion is the platform's strength — tons of PCIe lanes for GPUs, compute cards, NVMe, and NICs — but bifurcation settings live in the BIOS and the manual really matters. This is not a gamer's platform; the parts around the CPU cost more than the CPU.

Question 4

Can Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX run games, and is it a sensible choice for a gaming system?

Accepted Answer

The Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX is a 64-core/128-thread WRX80 workstation processor. It runs games, but you'll feel the waste: the WRX80 board, eight-channel ECC memory, and workstation cooling cost a fortune, and none of it shows up in games. Its single-core speed loses to a few-hundred-dollar desktop CPU, so high frames just aren't coming. The realistic case: you already have this platform in a studio doing heavy work, and a GPU gets added for fun — fine. Buying one personally to game means paying for the platform and losing on frame rates; just look at a 7800X3D or 9800X3D build instead.
