Question 1

Is a laptop with Core Ultra 9 288V good enough for gaming, and does the CPU or GPU matter more?

Accepted Answer

The Core Ultra 9 288V is a Lunar Lake thin-and-light chip, commonly paired with an iGPU or entry dGPU. V-series uses on-package LPDDR5X, so memory bandwidth and cooling matter more than core count for gaming. 1080p low for esports and light titles is realistic; 1440p/4K high settings are out of scope. Plug in, use performance mode, and log 15 minutes with HWiNFO: GPU ~95% with power near TGP means GPU-limited; GPU under ~90% with saturated CPU threads points to CPU sustained power. Most buyers use this for office plus light gaming, so don't hold it to gaming-laptop standards.

Question 2

What should I look for in a laptop with Core Ultra 9 288V: build quality, ports, and expandability?

Accepted Answer

The 288V is a soldered V platform — both CPU and LPDDR5X memory are commonly non-replaceable. Check the exact laptop's memory capacity, SSD slots, USB4 and display outputs, wireless card, display, discrete-GPU TGP if present, sustained CPU package power, and performance or quiet modes. Thin V designs usually trade runtime and expansion for weight, so evaluate the whole configuration rather than the Ultra 9 label alone.

Question 3

Can a laptop cool Core Ultra 9 288V, and will it throttle under sustained load?

Accepted Answer

The 288V is a Lunar Lake thin-and-light platform: it doesn't run hot, and sustained performance is capped by platform power, not conventional cooling pressure. Short bursts are fine, while long renders or exports gradually settle to the platform's power limit.

To see the actual curve, run 15 minutes of full load plugged in; measure office battery life separately in balanced mode.

Question 4

How many cores and threads does Core Ultra 9 288V have, and is it suitable for gaming and video editing in a laptop?

Accepted Answer

8 cores, 8 threads (4P + 4E), P-core 3.3GHz base / 5.1GHz boost, 12MB L3, Lunar Lake, launched Q3 2024. V-series packages the memory on-chip and drops Hyper-Threading, built for battery life and thinness. Eight threads handle office and light development, and Lunar Lake's iGPU is a real step up, covering light gaming. The soldered LPDDR5X (up to 32GB) can't be upgraded, so pick capacity once, correctly.
