Question 1

Is a laptop with Core Ultra 7 155U good enough for gaming, and does the CPU or GPU matter more?

Accepted Answer

Check whether the model has a dGPU first. The Arc iGPU handles esports and light titles, with frames heavily influenced by memory bandwidth and power; AAA needs a dGPU model. These laptops are office-oriented with gaming as a side ability. For gaming-first users, an H-series gaming laptop at the same price offers a clearly better experience.

Question 2

Can a laptop cool Core Ultra 7 155U, and will it throttle under sustained load?

Accepted Answer

Short office bursts are fine on a thin chassis; sustained full load will throttle, which is the design trade-off of this class, not a defect. Before buying, find the model's sustained-power numbers in plugged-in performance mode — some designs hold 25W+, others pull back at 15W, and the same chip feels very different. On dGPU models, check the shared CPU/GPU budget as well.

Question 3

How many cores and threads does Core Ultra 7 155U have, and is it suitable for gaming and video editing in a laptop?

Accepted Answer

The Core Ultra 7 155U is 12 cores and 14 threads (2 performance + 8 efficiency + 2 low-power) on Meteor Lake, 1.7GHz base and 4.8GHz max turbo, 12MB L3, 57W TDP, 11 TOPS NPU. Only 2 of those are performance cores doing the heavy lifting — office work, browser tabs, and light editing are fine. This Meteor Lake generation sells on efficiency and the iGPU; for gaming the iGPU handles mainstream esports at medium-low settings. When comparing laptops, plugged-in performance mode and sustained power tell you more than the core count — 12 cores doesn't mean 12-core-class multithreading.

Question 4

What should I look for in a laptop with Core Ultra 7 155U: build quality, ports, and expandability?

Accepted Answer

The Core Ultra 7 155U is a soldered platform — you're picking a laptop, not a board. Check whether memory is soldered (common on this generation), whether an M.2 slot is free, and whether ports cover your gear.

A low-power platform's performance ceiling is fixed, so money is better spent on the screen, RAM capacity, and build quality than on a fancier U-class CPU. Manageability features like vPro are of limited value to individual users.

Question 5

The 12-core 22-TOPS Ultra 7 155U — does the first-gen U-series AI still hold?

Accepted Answer

The Ultra 7 155U is the thin-laptop part at 12 cores/14 threads, 4.8GHz boost, 12MB of L3, VNNI INT8, AI Boost around 22 TOPS and an iGPU on the Meteor Lake U-series, an earlier NPU platform. It sold on 'thin laptops can do AI too'; today's reality: light AI fully covered, a steady entry-level output. Whether it holds depends on the user: existing thin-laptop owners keep using it, where 22 TOPS is ample for meetings, captions, voice and OCR; new buyers shouldn't expect fluent 7B-class — new platforms carry roughly four times its NPU. It's a generational transition: enough for light work, short on ambition.
