Is a laptop with Core i9 12900HX good enough for gaming, and does the CPU or GPU matter more?

How well a 12900HX laptop games is set by discrete-GPU TGP and cooling: the same GPU at full vs. reduced power can differ by more than 15% in frame rate, while the CPU is usually left with headroom.

Confirm the GPU model, TGP rating, and dual-load results before buying; frame-time dips and 1% lows at 1080p high refresh are the only places worth scrutinizing the CPU.
