Question 1

How much can Core i7 13850HX's performance change between power modes, and when should performance mode be used?

Accepted Answer

Performance mode pushes the power and cooling budget higher, but without per-mode test data the change can't be given a number. To verify, plug in and run the same task in balanced and performance modes, watching power and clocks. On most gaming laptops performance mode gains only a few percent while noise and battery cost climb — often not worth it.

Question 2

How many cores and threads does Core i7 13850HX have, and is it suitable for gaming and video editing in a laptop?

Accepted Answer

20 cores, 28 threads (8P + 12E), 5.3GHz boost, 30MB L3, Raptor Lake, laptop HX, launched Q1 2023. 20C/28T sits just under the flagship in 13th-gen HX, with plenty of headroom for video editing, compiling, and multiple VMs. Keep the BIOS microcode updated, as this is 13th gen. It's BGA-soldered with no upgrade path, so sustained-power data matters more than the model number when choosing a laptop.

Question 3

How long can a laptop with Core i7 13850HX last for office work and gaming away from the charger?

Accepted Answer

Battery life is a system metric, not a CPU-only one: capacity, display, GPU, OS, and mode settings decide the outcome together. The 13850HX contributes to the draw but cannot alone predict hours. For office runtime, look at battery Wh and hybrid-graphics settings; gaming basically needs the charger.

Question 4

Is a laptop with Core i7 13850HX good enough for gaming, and does the CPU or GPU matter more?

Accepted Answer

The Core i7 13850HX is a 20-core, 28-thread HX processor. On a gaming laptop, the GPU and its power limit usually decide performance before the CPU name does — don't be swayed by the i7 label.

1080p high refresh leans on the processor; 1440p/4K puts more pressure on the GPU. The laptop's cooling and performance mode matter too — check the TGP and MUX support.
