Question 1

What cooler does Ryzen 7 5800X need, and how do gaming and sustained all-core loads differ?

Accepted Answer

105W with noticeable heat retention: a dual tower is the safe gaming choice, and a 240mm AIO adds margin for long full loads. Avoid bargain coolers; insufficient cooling on Zen 3 results in direct throttling.

Question 2

How does Ryzen 7 5800X handle gaming, and how large is the gap versus cheaper models?

Accepted Answer

The 5800X's eight cores still game well at 1080p high refresh, and beyond 1440p the GPU takes over. The AM4 platform saves money on DDR4 memory.

On a tight budget, a 5700X3D/5800X3D on the same platform is better value for gaming.

Question 3

What motherboard suits Ryzen 7 5800X, and how should power delivery, memory, and ports be balanced?

Accepted Answer

The 5800X runs AM4: B550 or X570 both work; older B450/X470 function after a BIOS update, but verify the VRM handles 105W. Use high-frequency dual-channel DDR4; it matters for game frame rates.

Question 4

How should the core and thread counts of Ryzen 7 5800X be understood, and do more cores help in games?

Accepted Answer

8 cores, 16 threads, 3.8GHz base / 4.7GHz boost, 105W, 32MB L3, AM4, launched November 2020. The gaming sweet spot of its day, now overtaken by newer platforms but cheap used. Great value on an existing AM4 board and fine for gaming and daily use; mind that it runs hot and retains heat, so don't cheap out on cooling.
